OC Golf Day 2000

Canny amateurs make it tough for OC professional.

Each year brings a new element to this well established OC event. This year the Golf Society welcomed for the first time, professional golfer and Old Clayesmorian, Ian Havell to the golf day on 23rd June at Temple Golf Club. Partnered with Piers Sabine in the morning round, Ian smacked a majestic drive straight down the first hole and finished just short of the green 383yards away. Sabine gaped, awestruck as did the other OC's watching on the first tee it was going to be a good day!!

Despite Ian's prodigious hitting and the deftness of Sabine's putting (not to mention his masterly use of gamesmanship), it was victory in the morning round for Max Dowse (a welcome return to the winners enclosure after missing last year's event) and Nick Mason with 40 stableford points. David Caddy and his partner Kelvin Moore were runners up on 39.

Following the traditional Temple Golf Club lunch and not insubstantial amounts of their reasonably priced clubIan Havell warms up claret, the afternoon round began. We play again in fourball format but with an individual prize for the Iwerne Cup. John Bentley was due to defend the cup this year but unfortunately had been taken ill during the early part of the summer and was recovering from an operation. Last I spoke with him in July he was doing well.

In runners-up spot was regular OC Golf Day supporter David Bennett, but with a winning score of 37 points Barry Stevenson took the Iwerne Cup for the year 2000.

The fourball competition in the afternoon was won by newcomer, Spencer Holtom and partner Nick Mason with Robin Harrison and Barry Stevenson second and Ian Smith and Max Dowse third.

Barry Stevenson with the Iwerne CupAs we toasted Barry's Iwerne Cup win, Ian Havell came up to me and said 'Thanks I have really enjoyed the day - these guys can really play!! I will be back next year to take them on, now I know what I am up against!!

Ian, Barry, John Bentley and all OCs will be welcome to join us for next year's event - Friday 22nd June 2001 at Temple Golf Club. As my work colleagues would say 'Diarize it now'!!
