Letters 2000

Dear Mr Spinney

Thank you for your letter regarding the new Headmastership and I wish Mr Cooke every success in his new appointment

Are you a relative of J D Spinney who was my housemaster for some five years? We both came down from Craigend Park in Edinburgh. He always made his history periods most interesting, particularly when it had a Naval flavour!

I enclose some computer generated images from photos taken while I was at Clayesmore during the late thirties. I have put in some names that I remember. Boles and McKillop were both close friends of mine and were both killed in action during the war. Boles and I both being prefects at the same time, he in Spinneys House and I in Burkes.

The photo of the boys in the truck is a Manual squad in action, the vehicle being an ancient Morris often driven by Mr Verrinder the Science Master. The swimming pool was actually excavated by the boys, using picks and shovels and a wheelbarrow. there were no JCB's then. The photo of the aeroplane was of one that landed in the school grounds in 1936 and this together with the one of the stable buildings I entered in the School Photo Competition,

I will be interested to hear any news of Cornelius or Hommert or Tulloch as we were all friends in the same house.

I hope that these photos will be of interest to the school.

Yours sincerely

A J Ballantine(35-42)
