Recollections of Scadding

When I first arrived in '42, there was Eveleigh and Koster, both excellent artists. I think they were good because Scadding allowed them to express themselves on imperial sheets and large canvasses. I remember my first interview with Col King, seeing Eveleigh's and Koster's landscapes and still lifes dotted around his study. At Dulwich Prep we were confined to Water Colour and scraps of paper. I got a scholarship to Clayesmore on the strength of my wartime saving stamp poster 'Buy These, by these". It was a joy to spread myself on canvass and oil colours, with Scadding's quiet encouragement and inspiration. After school the boys congregated in Scadding's little drawing room in the main block, making toast and carrying on.

We painted about the school grounds and, by way of a change, worked with the youthful Miss SpencerWatson in her sculpture studio. Later Down and myself decorated class and common room walls with our murals.

I owe a lot to Scadding's generous encouragement and notwithstanding my business career around the world, have always had an easel at hand - and to know that my children and grand children are carrying on the artistic tradition.

When I went down memory lane to Clayesmore some fifteen years ago, I am sorry I missed Scadding - He'd gone out when I knocked at his door near the old pub.

Happy memories.

John (Garry Donald) Innes(43-46)
