Hoped for eighty
diners, seventy-four sat down. Top Table, four sprigs; looked like a dinner as
the spoons hit the soup. "Leek & Potato with sour cream and
chives". Wish you'd been there for the soup? Read on: "Roast saddle of
Devon Lamb stuffed with rosemary and thyme. Traditional roast potatoes, seasonal
green vegetables". No point in being Hon. Sec. if you can't bend the menu
your way! So we had Burnt Cambridge cream for a second year running. If you want
apple pie next year, run for Hon. Sec, the job is up for grabs.
Prior to the descent of
the food, there was a small matter of an AGM downstairs in the Bar. All
contestants set to and by ten past seven, we were into the soup aforesaid.
New faces at the top
table. Martin Cooke our new Headmaster, having moved from the Prep School and
Andrew Roberts-Wray and his wife Charlotte having moved in. At this time of
year, somebody has to have 'flu so Mrs Cooke drew the short straw and took to
her sick-bed. Seen at the OC day a couple of weeks later, she was the picture of
health and normality!
Speeches: Rob Wyatt
proposed the School. Well qualified, having been at Clayesmore during part of
the last Century. Martin Cook came up roses in his reply and spoke of a new
Science Block to be built near the "Middles" (to some of us). I later
saw the plans and the thing is in much the same style as the buildings nearby
and would fit in well. "The Society" was proposed by our OC Author,
Julian Rathbone. Not only did I fix the pud', but I got him to sign my copy of
his "Kings of Albion". Not as steamy as "The Last English
King" but a good read and to be recommended. John Fryer replied for the OC
Soc. Being a professional speaker, he kept order in class and saw off his brief
in good order.
From there on it was
downhill all the way. Had there been a piano downstairs, I think the event would
have spilled out into the Strand and frightened the horses!
