Subject: Lamb and Flag
Dear "Agent X",
Thank you for your e-mail telling me of the next meting of the Old Clayesmorians
at the Lamb and Flag. Unfortunately, I can't be there. As it happened I was
there on Tuesday June 26, fully aware that it was the wrong Tuesday but we had a
good lunch and an enjoyable beer and thought about what we were missing. I left
a sealed note for you with the highest authority of the pub and he said he would
give it to you. All the workers seemed a bit "out of it" and it's
quite possible you never got it.
Originally we had scheduled our trip to include your regular date but we were
delayed by my daughter's inability to get away from her teaching job. In New
Mexico the schools have to teach a certain minimum number of days every year and
"getting out of school" is always determined by the number of
"snow days" (when there is no school) and extra days are dumped on
everybody.
We would have given you good statistics--Lesley and her husband, and three
teenage daughters. They voted the pub lunch as "superior".
Sorry to have missed you.
