Dear Nick,
Rendezvous in Sri Lanka.
I thought I should write as I'm about to return to United Kingdom having spent the last three years as the Defence Adviser in Sri Lanka. We have a "Barmy Army" roasting with us at the moment. Never seen so many Brits out here (thought to be around 8000) and what's more they have been great fun, unlike our football supporters!
I have enclosed a photograph of three hoods, Janak Hirdaramani
(65-70), Richard Bugg (65-68) and myself (65-70). The piccie was taken at
Janak's house when Richard Bugg and his lovely family came over to stay with us
just before Christmas. Janak, who has done exceptionally well since he left
Clayesmore, is the Director of the Hirdaramani Group of companies here in
Colombo. His hospitality is second to none - a wonderful host. I could not have
wanted a better mentor for my three years. He remains ultra keen to meet up with
any of his old school friends if by chance they are visiting Sri Lanka. I
attended his big five zero party not so long ago and mine is just hanging around
the corner. We are all undoubtedly getting a tad older!
I enjoyed reading the Roy McIsaac tapes as your discussions were
based on things happening around the time I was at Clayesmore. I thought I might
take the liberty to answer one of your queries and leave you with another. In
your conversations you mention about the first girls from Croft House who joined
us in the sixth form. Please find enclosed another piccie taken by a budding
David Bailey! The young lady mentioned with the long legs was called Ruth Lewis,
(not too difficult to identify in the photograph) and clearly I was not the only
one to have noticed! Her father was in the Army. Unfortunately I never had the
pleasure to serve with him. Who are the other three? My memory is not as lively
as it used to be! The pretty blond on the right used to live in the Corfe Mullen
area. The picture was taken in the Manor Yard in 69-70ish. I believe there were
five girls from Croft House, one of which was mentioned was Jane Salkeld, three
are on the photograph and the other I appeared to have missed. I have also
enclosed another interesting picture of 'a hockey team'. It may be of use. -

I leave here at the end of April having had a fabulous and most interesting tour
in this beautiful yet war-torn country. I take up the appointment as Old College
Commander at Sandhurst in June for two years. I look forward to meeting up once
again I'll attempt to bring both Janak and Richard back to Iwerne Minster this
year!
Yours ever
Robert (Lieutenant Colonel R N Kendell MBE RTR) (66-70)
