Phillip Donnellan 1937 - 40

In February The National Film Theatre played a very generous host to the works of Phillip Donnellan(37-40) who died in aged 75 in l999. Over six nights all his major films were shown. The NFT stated that PD was "a remarkable television producer and film maker, whose work created poetic realism worthy of Humphrey Jennings with a concern for social reform characteristic of the great social documentaries of the l930s. Uncompromising in his response to bureaucracy, and passionate in his determination to provide a platform for the 'grossly ignored', he frequently provoked furious reactions from the BBC establishment, resulting in the banning and censorship of many of his best films."
