Dear Headmaster

David Koster and I became friends as pupils at Clayesmore in the early 1940's and have remained friends. Both of us are professional Artists (C.V.s enclosed). When at Clayesmore we were greatly privileged, not withstanding those war years, to be taught by many excellent teachers, among them our art teacher Norris Ackyrod Scadding. We wish to record our gratitude for his encouragement and inspirational art teaching, which was underpinned by his art practice, in a tangible way.

In broad outline our proposal to the OC Chairman and Committee, which we hope will have your approval, is that David and I each donate one of our original works on paper, framed, to them for sale: by way of a silent auction and the entire proceeds of such sales be used to establish an CC Scadding annual prize trust fund. We believe that such a fund could grow quite quickly with an aim say of raising £2000 minimum capital and wisely invested the annual interest be used to fund an OC Annual Scadding Art Prize to be adjudicated by the Head and the Art Department Staff to a Clayesmore pupil, 15 or older, who in their opinion, has over the previous twelve months made a sustained commitment to art practice in any of the art disciplines offered by the art department including the submission of six works on paper, of any size, and executed in any media, or mixed media which relate to the Dorset environment and by consensus, or by majority vote, are deemed to be outstanding.

The award recipient should in advance have agreed that one of these six works be chosen by the awarding panel for inclusion in a school permanent collection; but professionally framed paid for from the trust fund with details on the back of the frame to record the artist's name, title, media, size and year of award.

Further funding of the trust could be obtained if the OC Committee were to have the donated works printed professionally as quality Greeting cards with suitable Wording, (stating on the cards, that all incomes after the reimbursement of printing costs will be paid to the said fund).

Relevant material is attached which will, we trust, assist in the consideration of this proposal. We have used laser printing to reproduce our work in colour, which is only an approximation of the originals. We will be pleased to respond to any query.

With good wishes

David Koster. (41 44) John Eveleigh.(40 44)
