Triple Bill

Few institutions in Cirencester escape the energetic patronage of the Gloucestershire towns local grandees, Lord and Lady Apsley (Sarah Chapman 78 - 79).

Already campaigning for a public inquiry into foot and mouth disease, and fighting to save the local hospital from closure, this crusading duo are to open a third front.

Their latest project is a campaign to save the town's dilapidated Regal Cinema from the attentions of property spivs. "I'm afraid I've already blown my New Year's resolution not to take on too much," admits Lady Apsley, "but I was truly horrified to discover that a developer was interested in closing down Cirencester's cinema to make way for housing.

"Our aim is to get the town to invest in its own entertainment and run the cinema as a charitable trust".
