Dear Nicholas Zelle
H A JOWERS I8.12.32 - 15.12.02
I am writing to tell you of the sad death of one of your 'Old Clayesmorians' I
am afraid "Jim" (as I knew him) died on 15th December just three days
short of his 70th Birthday. 1 don't know quite when he was at Clayesmore (1946 -
50 Ed) but maybe someone will remember him.
I am afraid he had not been well for some time and spent the last five years in
a wheelchair, finally having a leg amputated in January last year. Throughout it
all he remained positive and cheerful though suffering with great pain from
arthritis, then developing kidney failure in the last few months of his life. He
was buried at Beckley church on Christmas eve (with a rousing Christmas carol
"God rest ye merry gentlemen " to send him on his way).
He was always talking of his days at Clayesmore particularly his history lessons
- with Mr Spinney (I read with interest that you have published a book by him
which I may well send for - we have driven through the grounds many times so I
got to know many of the buildings and we even called once many years ago and met
the headmaster of the time - his name escapes me now).
I do hope you have a good get together at your Annual Dinner at
Simpson's-in-the-Strand and wish you all a very happy evening with many old
friends.
With best wishes
Mrs Diana Jowers
