From George B. R. Gray

Friday 12th September ‘97

As a boy at Craigend I was one of the thirty boys that transferred with Evelyn King to Clayesmore in 1935.
My father, a local farmer, had recognised E.M. King’s efficiency and ability and so I was sent to Iwerne Minster.
I am sorry I cannot be with you on Saturday the 20th, in particular, because I would have wished to have been present at the Memorial Service for George Dobie.

I knew him at Clayesmore, and in fact it was he who drove me in the school car for interview at Cirencester College, but as a result of my father’s unexpected death in July 1937 I studied Agriculture at Edinburgh, working from home.
For many years George Dobie was a regular visitor to his parents, when his father was the grieve (foreman) at Ewford , Dunbar, one of the best farms in East Lothian. When there on holiday he usually called at Smeaton for a walk round my property.

He told me then that he had been born at Gortonlee, Lasswade, a farm occupied by my son Quentin Gray.
I write to ask if you will be kind enough to advise members of his family that if they are visiting the Lothians and would like to visit Gortonlee I will meet them and show them the farm.

Yours sincerely,

George B. R. Gray
