From Penelope Richardson
Many thanks for your letter of the 19th June together with the prospectus.
It is good to hear that the school is flourishing. I did not know that it had been
Co-educational since the seventies.
I think the only Co-educational when I was there was Beadales. A married couple (the
McGregors) had taught there before joining the Clayesmore staff.
I was at the school from January 1938 until summer 1942. After marrying we lived in church path next to what is now your Arts Centre.
My husband taught English and Latin to the top forms, and French lower down in the
school.
When war broke out, he, together with most of the other young masters, joined up. He was
awarded an MC in Italy. We both remember John Elderkin.
We went out to Kenya in 1950 first to Kaptagal (Co-educational school) and then opened our own boys prep school - Manor House, Kitale 1956 - 1974
Our teams played football and tennis matches at Manor house and Pembroke House Gilgil.
I intend to write to Miss Dear in due course.
I hope Cranborne Chase is still as unspoilt and lovely as ever. A wonderful place for
riding and picnics.
With all good wishes from us both to you and Clayesmore.
Yours sincerely,
Penelope Richardson.
