Dear Mr Zelle,

I wonder if you remember me - I was at Clayesmore from 1973 through 1978: sang in the choir for a while, played the bassoon briefly too. I was a Rhodesian in those days - now an American, I suppose.

I got your e-mail address through John Grant who managed to track me down here in Denver through a relative in the UK. John sent me a Clayesmore newsletter and I thought it would be fun to re-establish contact with the old school and some of my contemporaries. I am delighted that you are still associated with Clayesmore and the OC society. Do you ever see Mr Mash, is he still at Clayesmore ?

I know Spinney and Appleby and MacDonald had died (I was in England 5 years ago and dropped by the school to show my (American) wife the place and we had tea with Mr Scott) and many others had left including yourself - heard you were a property developer in London ?

I ended up going to study mining engineering at the Royal School of Mines, which as you know, is situated right next to the Royal College of Music. In fact a popular place for lunch for Minesmen (as we were known) was the RCM - not because of the food but because Imperial College women were so plain (to be polite) compared with the RCM ladies.

After the RSM I went back to Zimbabwe and worked in the mining industry then in 1986-7 had a stint in London as a mining analyst with a stockbroking firm. Went to New York after the 87 crash and studied for an MBA in Finance, graduating in 92. Ended up in Denver working for a mining finance house. Made (and subsequently lost !) a pile of dough and now work for Rothschilds, the US branch out of Denver, running a private mining investment fund.

What else - oh yes, married to Joan who is 7 months pregnant with our first child.

I would love to hear from you and any other OCs who were contemporaries - I have very fond memories of Clayesmore and (at least some of) the people there.

Regards,

Bruce (Higson - Smith) (1973 - 78)
