Letters 1998

From Lt Col R.N. Kendell MBE

14 August '98

Dear Sir, (Old habits never die. Ed)

On arrival last March, I was given numerous name cards from the outward going DA. As he handed over a brown envelope, one name card fell onto my desk. As I picked it up I noticed the name J. Hirdaramani. I mentioned to my wife that I went to school with a Jake Hirdaramani. Without wasting any time i tried the numbers on the card, but to no avail. the next morning I mentioned to my friend, Col Tim O'Dennel did he know Jake Hirdaramini and he laughed. He mentioned that he was a 'big wig' in Sri Lanka and one of the directors of a huge garments business looking after 'Marks & Sparks' and 'Next' but to name a few. Needless to say the phone rang and it was Jake asking Tim O'Dennel was his replacement Robert Kendell, who had been through Sandhurst and had more than a passing interest in Armour! Tim handed over the phone totally bemused. Suffice it to say both Janak and his lovely wife Mona are once again great friends. It is as if we had only parted the odd day ago. In fact we left school in 1970.

I have given him all the necessary details to rejoin the clan. We will both try and get back for next year's dinner at Simpson's-in-the-Strand.

It was great finding an old school chum so many miles from home.

Yours sincerly,

Robert Kendell. (1966 -70)
