OLD CLAYESMORIAN DAY
22nd February 1998.I used to think it was the weather that kept them away in Feb. This year we had a mild sunny day in a run of fine weather, so nobody was caught out by a surprise fine day. there was a hockey match organised by Barry Julyan (86-92)so that is eleven OCs. Wrong! The only others in the team were Adam Firth(85-90) and Robert Wyatt (90-95). The remainder was made up of very good players from all over, prepared to take up sticks at short notice in the name of the game. The score was 6 - 3 to the "OC" team. Three of the goals being scored by a chap with one arm. That has to be something. Try clapping with one hand!
Barry Julyan felt more notice was needed before a game and that players who agree to play should turn up and deliver on the day. It seems that volunteers will duck out if it suits them. B.J. remarked that time was when the OCs could field two teams of a Sunday. Headmaster wondered if the event was getting to be more of a contest and less of a game. The alternative being a game more sporting than specialist. Having seen these guys in action, Hon. Sec is glad he only played Hospital rugby. This was a game at Mach 1 and above. Yet all survived to take a very decent lunch on board and chat with Trudi Julyan, Bob Mash(52-58), and David Spence(83-86), representing the entire non-playing turnout. "The Captains and the Kings depart" and Hon. Sec. & Mrs H.S. took off for Shroton to take tea with Tommy Everett, who, though seriously over thirty hardly looks it and is pretty well, which is something a couple of thousand of you will be glad to know.
Do we field a thousand, for the Millennium Game?
