From the Kentish Express, Thursday, June 3rd, 1999

Winning verses for 2000. A retired psychiatrist turned poet is celebrating after having one of his poems accepted for inclusion in an anthology commemorating the Millennium.

Mike Riddall, 66, of Pay Street, Densole, was encouraged to enter the poetry competition organised by Viztex Publications in Sussex after coming second in a recent competition organised by Ottakars bookshop in Folkestone.

His poem, Clumsy Clots, described by the author as a "semi-humorous and long winded" account of our dependence on computers and other machines, is due to appear in a collection of poems called Moments in Time.

Mr Riddall, who has written poetry "on and off" over the years, is also an accomplished actor and appeared in Ken Loach's film Family Life, as a psychiatrist.

He has also taken part in a number of student film productions and was once called upon to play the part of a surgeon.

One of his poems, expressing the views of many Hawkinge residents about the long-awaited by pass, was published recently in the Kentish Express letters page.
