1.The minutes of the previous meeting, 31st. Jan, 1998 were read by Hon. Sec. approved by the meeting and signed by President in the Chair.
2.Report for 1998 from Hon. Sec. A narrative account of last year's events is to be found in the various articles printed in the OC Newsletter. The purpose of this report is delivery of facts for the record.
The Society's annual Dinner was held at Simpson's-in-the-Strand on 31st January 1998. Attendance was low with a turnout of half that of the Centenary Dinner with fifty Dining. Although wives and partners were invited for the first time in an effort to 'modernise' the event and to de-mystify the former 'all male' status Simpson's, very few turned up. Indeed, it is worth noting that OC girls are seldom seen at the Dinner.
Speakers included Gordon Chubb, (42-46) for the School, with Headmaster replying. Hamish Dow, (73-78) proposed the Society with Henry Teed, (42-48) in reply. Founder's Toast by the President, David Anderson, (41-45).
The Society had agreed to subsidise a cricket tour to the Barbados during the summer holiday to the tune of £500. Mr. D. Rimmer, Master i/c cricket moved among the company and raised further funds. In addition, a cartoon by the well known OC artist, Tony Hart, (41-45) was auctioned for £245 and a clutch of wines also raised an enhanced sum. In the event, the team lost seven matches out of eight but clearly enjoyed themselves off the pitch. An account can be found on page 43 of the Newsletter.
The Society is to fund the planting of roses on the south side of the School Chapel. The School Council intend to include a plaque to record the gift.
Your Society helped to fund "The best Golf Day yet", see page 9 in the Newsletter. A donation of £100 went toward Green fees for twenty-one OC Players. The next day is June 25th.
The Cormorants Cricket Week was another successful event. The team played five matches between 12th-16th July to great sporting and social effect. See Newsletter: page 10.
OC Days during the year were in every way remarkable. The first on 22nd Feb barely registered. Although there was a hockey match, there were only three OCs in the team, the rest being 'imports' in search of a game. Three other OCs watched; a total of six. An account appears on page 7 of the Newsletter. the June Cricket Day never took place at all. the Chairman alone being present initially. Two OCs later appeared for lunch, though their names are not recorded. On the other hand, the Choral Day and the Dorset Dinner on Saturday 19th September were highly successful and well attended for most of the performers dined and many of the diners came early to hear an impressive performance in the Chapel under the direction of Nick Zelle OC, and Ron Smith, both previous Directors of Music. Ian Crabbe OC : organ. Newsletter : pages 8&9. The Dinner saw fifty applying and forty-six on the night. Speeches short and light by the Headmaster, Mike Henbest for the school with Keith Hall (41-47) concluding. Newsletter: page 8.
Between the end of the Chapel performance and the Dinner an Extraordinary General meeting was held to vote to bring pre '87 subscriptions to a uniform £10 by bankers' order. Passed unanimously. Forms enclosed in Newsletter.
the Newsletter deserves mention again this year for quality and content perhaps unsurpassed. Nick Zelle assisted by Hugh Thompson have edited most ably and quality has been literally in the gift of John Burnie OC of Scott, Burnie Colour printing Ltd. He has charged the Society far less than the going rate and has included colour illustrations at no extra cost over monochrome. He and his companion Anne Loise Stebbing are to be the Society's guests at the 1999 Dinner.
3.Report from acting Hon. Treas. Not possible to present accounts this year and therefore our auditors to approve. The reason is that the School normally sends the levy deducted from leavers at the end of the school year in September. This has still not been received Jan '99 following several enquiries. Headmaster being present offered to persue the Bursar and Accounts Dept. on his return. Having no income from the School, the Society is in deficit to £2337 to be added to a deficit of £1820 in 1997. To be hoped a finalised version can be published with the next Newsletter.
4.Election of Chairman. R. F. Mash is retiring from his teaching post in the Biology Department at Clayesmore at the end of the summer term. Agreed that Jane Salkeld shall continue until R.F.M. can take over.
5.Election of Hon Sec. Due at this meeting. Nearing the age of 70 he feels he is likely to be the oldest in any similar group and due for replacement. H. G. Thompson has said he is prepared to consider subject to certain caveats. Hoped that transfer can be effected over the next few months.
6.Election of Hon. Treasurer. Karen French took over a year ago but was unable to be present to be voted in. Present at this meeting, she was proposed by H. G. Chubb and seconded by R. J. F. Parker; none against.
7.Election of membership Sec. Jane Salkeld has held this post for several years and has wished to off-load it since becoming Chairman. Now, as before, no takers. At all events, John Grant's OC Office at the School helps to take much of the strain. A certain amount falls on the Hon Sec. as a fielder in the game which is passed on to J. G. direct to be put in his database. Notwithstanding, the post remains vacant. those reading these minutes in the Newsletter are invited to volunteer.
8.Any other business. N. J. Zelle for the Newsletter states that copy for the next edition is welcome and notes that while younger OCs are complaining that there is little to interest their age-group, they are sending nothing in. N.J.Z. commends 'e' mail to contributors. M. Shahabi (69-73) wondered if the Dinner could be later in the year. Headmaster remarked that the January date was 'exeat based' as must be any others, which begin to collide with other dates in the school calendar. This date having stood the test of time, was allowed to stand.
NO FURTHER BUSINESS. MEETING CLOSED AT 18.41hrs.
