RECORD ATTENDANCE AS JOHN BENTLEY RETAINS OC GOLF SOCIETY'S IWERNE CUP
S
ponsorship by the OC Society is certainly paying off. Through the donation the Golf Society receives, it is possible to have a great day's golf including traditional golf club lunch for under £50 a head. As a result, I am delighted to say that we had a record number, 22 golfers, turn out for this year's OC Golf society event on June 25th. It is great to see that those who do make their, sometimes apprehensive, first visit to the golf day invariably come back year after year.George Hodgson Piers Sabine Bary Stevenson Robin Harrison |
Mike Roe, Mike Jones, Barry Stevenson, David Bennett & Rodney Spokes were welcome newcomers this year. Mike Jones, resplendent in his shorts and straw Stetson made an immediate impression, Barry and Rodney were prize winners and David & Mike Roe still had smiles on their faces at the end of the day. It was good to see all five of them.
O.C.'s On the Tee |
Long-time supporter of the society and one of the great OC characters, Piers Sabine, was playing some of his best golf ever. He won the morning round with 34 stableford points and was leading in the clubhouse in the afternoon competition for the Iwerne Cup with 38 points. But the last match out on the course produced some scintillating scoring and John Bentley shot to the top of the leader board with 41 points and retained the cup he won in that nostalgic match last year.
John Bently with the Iwerne Cup |
John and Rodney Spokes won the fourball competition and Piers and Barry Stevenson were runners up. It was good to see Colin Jones back again this year and he and David Caddy picked up third prize. Some good golf and even better conversation was contributed by the other attendees, among them
Malcolm Peake, Ian and Clive Smith, Nick Gwinn, Trevor and Robin Harrison, George Hodgson, Treasurer Andrew Beaton and of course, our President, Roddy Symes.
Two stalwarts of the Society, John Garnett and Max Dowse and OC PGA Iain Havell, regretfully had to pull out late on but we hope to see them back next year.
The Golf Society is building attendance levels nicely each year and it would give me great pleasure to write in 2000, that we had welcomed our first lady golfers to the society - the last great frontier! So any OC girls who want join us next year on FRIDAY JUNE 23rd at Temple Golf Club, Nr Maidenhead, would be welcomed with open arms - (is that politically correct enough for the OC magazine? probably not). Any other OCs whose golf is good, bad or indifferent would also be guaranteed a good day - so contact Julian Bailey on 01344 624325 or 'e' mail jbail@microsoft.com. if you want to join us.
