Letters 1999

19th Feb 1999.

Dear Mrs Salkeld

The 1998 OC Newsletter has recently arrived addressed to my late husband, Mervyn Blatch. I have to tell you with great sadness that he died in May last year, aged 88.

I know that he enjoyed his school years at Clayesmore (1924-28 I think) and was much appreciative of the knowledge of History he acquired.

After his retirement from Shell Petroleum International he wrote several books on church buildings - two of which 'A Guide to London's Churches, 2nd. edition 1995, published by Constable. And 'The Churches of Surrey' published by Phillimore 1997 - are still in production and selling well.

We had a long happy marriage together for 57 years. Our daughter Gillian, married to an Episcopal Minister, Graham Fenton, lives in the States and they have 2 sons. Fortunately they are able to visit England fairly frequently.

I am not sure the above is of interest to you. I have had so many letters of appreciation regarding Mervyn's books and his ability to impart knowledge on this and other subjects, that I thought you might like to know of the achievements of an Old Clayesmorian.

Yours sincerely.

Eileen Blatch
