Col. Ivor Edwards Stuart

Col. Ivor Edward Stuart died peacefully in his sleep on the 19th September 1998, at his home in Fleet in South Dorset, where he had lived since 1948 on his return from India after the ending of the war against Japan.

Col. Ivor was born in Sydney, Australia. He was educated at Saint Leonard's Grammar School, Sydney, Sydney University, and later commissioned into the Indian Army from Sandhurst in 1934. He fought in the fighting retreat against the Japanese Army in Burma in 1942 and later met and married Elizabeth in 1944 in Lahore. They returned to England in 1947 and Ivor was then commissioned into the RAF regiment, where he served mainly in Aden, Jordan, and Germany.

After retiring from the RAF, he entered into teaching in 1959 at Clayesmore Preparatory School, Charlton Marshall, and served with Dick Everett, Hugh Glazebrook, John Hart-Davis, James Seddon and Mike Geary. He taught Mathematics and as a schoolmaster was an instant success. He was very much loved by the children and the staff at the Preparatory School in that era. In 1963 he succeeded Dick Everett as Headmaster, and with his wife, Elizabeth, led the school successfully throughout ten happy years. In 1973 he was succeeded as Headmaster by James Seddon and then went on to become a Governor of Clayesmore, overseeing the 'joining' of the Preparatory School with the Senior School on the Iwerne Minster site in 1973. It was his wisdom, enthusiasm, and his money, which enabled this venture to happen and succeed in a most spectacular way.

After leaving the Governing body in 1983, he retired with Elizabeth to his beloved Fleet. He became Editor of his regimental magazine and involved himself in Parish and Church matters. He was a committed and devout Christian throughout his life.

James Seddon (48-54)
