Subject: Michael J. Beacham 1957-61
To whom it may concern,
I have tried several times to contact Michael & his wife Burnie at their home in
St Peter Port Gurnsey, C.I. without success. They moved there from the mainland
about 4 years ago, and would like to know if you have an updated address or
phone number for them?
Recently received excellent School News Letter, and as always have eyes on
expansion and "pushing the envelope" as they say over here. My wife and I live
here in Birmingham,(with the emphasis on the ham) Alabama, about 160 miles west
of Atlanta. Our older boy Chris was a Scholar at Boston Univ. and now lives in
NY City. Younger son Eric will be a Freshman in August at UAB (University of
Alabama at Birmingham) 10 mins. from here. As a matter of interest, UAB has a
world class Medical School and probably leading Open Heart Hospital in US. Also
significant in AIDS research, and other organ Transplant Surgery/Research
I was a member of the 1st Cormorants Cricket Team with Clive Wilkinson as
Captain and we toured The West Country based in Cambourne, Cornwall. Nick Handy,
Scholar at Catherine’s College Cambridge, travelled as scorer being the
outstanding mathematician he was doubtless to ensure we got a fair rap!! Hope
they have a great season this year.
I appreciate any help you can provide with my beginning question.
best regards,
Adrian Drapkin

Dear Nick,
Thanks for the response to my earlier EM, and apologise for not remembering that
you and Tilmouth were along for the 1st Cormorants Tour. At one point, I was
riding with the charismatic Hugh Glazebrook to one of the Cornish opponents and
we ran into the back of another car- which was slightly embarrassing!!
I also recall that in a match against Cambourne, on a pitch which was so wet to
be almost unplayable, Roger Hosen their really fast bowler, pitched the ball at
least 2 feet over the top of the stumps!! l Later we learned that Hosen played
cricket for Cornwall, and had also played "Rugger" for England. They bowled us
out for a very small score, something like 40, but we did get about 7 of their
wickets pretty cheaply before inevitably loosing!
Do you recall the name of the House where we stayed on that trip?
A few years ago I heard that Clive Wilkinson was running The Whitsand Bay Hotel
at Port Wrinkle near St Germans & Saltash. Strangely enough an Aunt of mine had
a very small Hut on the edge of the cliffs 400 yds from the Hotel, and a friend
and I stayed there many times, and visited the Hotel when we were in need of a
real meal!! Many of the fisherman's cottages surrounding the small harbour were
without electricity at that time. It really was enchanting to see the oil lamps
burning at night, usually with the door open.(Summertime of course)
Do you hear what has happened to "Silky Wilkie" ? After the 1st Cormorants Week,
Clive's father was good enough to bring me to their house in Windsor, then
subsequently on to my parents place in Northwood.
Many years later I was the Export Manager for Parker Knoll in High Wycombe, and
for a brief time was asked to call on all the Colleges at Cambridge because our
UK rep had been taken ill. I worked with the Bursar at Catherine’s College, who
knew Nick Handy but he was not in residence at the time of my visits feel sure
he has now retired as Professor Handy?
Just a few thoughts of about 40 yrs ago.
Best regards,
Adrian Drapkin
