OC Deaths - Advised 2005

Swift, J.H.E. “Jack”, (16 – 21) the Brother of Arthur, enlisted with the Kenya Regiment on the outbreak of World War 2 and was posted to Palestine with the East African Rifles. There he rose to the rank of Lt Col and in March 1943 had a serious motor cycle accident from which he died from his injuries. His name appears on the Roll of Honour in the School Chapel.

Swift, Arthur R. (19 – 26) died on 15th December 1991. He had farmed for most of his life in Kenya and was quite well known there for his water colour paintings. He was attacked and seriously injured by persons unknown in his farm studio and he died about one month later.

Fullard-Leo, Leslie V. (24 – 28) died on 1st February 2001. He was aged 91 and lived in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Bond, Richard (28 – 32) died in 2004. He was an MBE and a survivor from the Northwood Park, Winchester days. He lived near Norwich, Norfolk.

Macvitie, John L. (35 – 38) died in 2002. At one time he owned a retail motor business in Malvern and had retired to live in Dartmouth.

Tapping, John L. (37 – 39) died in 2004. He lived in Newbury and a few years ago when asked his occupation replied that he was a retired businessman and a writer of unpublished novels.

Ballantine, Alexander John (35 – 40) died in 2004. He was a retired Farmer from Newton Abbot and was one of the original Craigenders.

Craymer, Peter P. (38 – 41) died on January 15th 2005. He lived in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

Edwards, J.C. (Teddy) (33 – 42) died on 20th November 2004. He was a retired Solicitor who lived in Bexhill on Sea.

Luboff, Andrei (40 – 45) died on 14th April 2005 following serious heart surgery. He was a retired Economist, Merchant Banker and Insurance/Reinsurance Executive living in Bromley, Kent.

Hill, F.R.W. (Freddy) (47 – 48) died on the 11th February 2005. He lived in Godalming, Surrey. A “sad and sudden loss”.

Dickins, Anthony V. (52 – 55) died in 2004. He was a Physician, Gastroenterology Specialist and President and Chief Executive of Interserve. He lived in Washington State, USA.

Pagella, Julian F. (53 – 58) died in 2004. He lived in Newton Abbot, Devon and was a Consulting Geotechnical Engineer.

Halls, Kevin S. (55 – 58) died in September 2004. He was a retired Sales Manager for Allied Flour Mills and with his wife, ran a small flower shop in Farnham, Hants. Using a metal detector, he recently discovered one of the most valuable and important iron age gold hoards ever found in Britain (see the OC Newsletter 2003) and was the subject of an episode in the BBC TV programme Hidden Treasure in September 2003.

Waters, Nick G. (57 – 60) died in April 2005. He lived in Derbyshire and was in the road haulage business.

Cook, Laurence B. (62 – 65) died on February 4th 2005. He ran a hairdressing business in Torquay.

Kendell, Robert N., MBE, late RTR (66 – 70) died on March 14th 2005 after a short but heroic fight against cancer. He was formerly the Old College Commander at Sandhurst, he served as British Liaison Officer to the US Army Armor School at Fort Knox, Kentucky and he was at one time Commanding Officer of 4/5 Royal Irish Rangers and a former Defence Advisor in Sri Lanka. He leaves a wife, Susanne and two sons, Christopher and Alexander.

Thomas, Robert (98 – 99) died in a road traffic accident in 2002. He lived in Hazelbury Bryan, Dorset.
