Dear Nick,
Thanks for the magazine. Well done! My brother always sends it on to me, which
is a sensible economy.
I must admit that the dinner price is a serious disincentive for me. Must be
somewhere else?
I hope that you have been flooded with copies of the Appleby first and second
year poetry books. I was sure that I could lay my hands on them but to no avail.
I could probably recite them! The second year I typeset single-handed and hence
got the printing prize. (Sadly - not a single copy. Ed)
I have found a lot of snapshots of Clayesmore people. Some of them are only in
negatives so I will have to steal some time at work to do contact prints and
scan them all in for you. Some good ones of Paul Bullivant since he appeared in
this issue. A candid shot of Humphrey and some lad taken from an unfortunate
angle.
Gary Rees, Paul Maddocks,
Johnathan Thornton, Riddell?? aka shiny boots of the CCF, me with Mary Pickford
at the school dance, Mary was the stunner from Home Farm in the village. Finally
an intimate shot of Tony Carter and Nick Gamper with some very attractive lady.

next door. Did you hear him as composer of the week? What a brilliant orchestrator. They played a new CD of Hiawatha that is out (first for 20 years)
by the chorus of the Welsh National Opera. The soloists and orchestra are great,
but the chorus is absolutely dire. The sopranos are SO wobbly that any harmony
is totally soured. Big disappointment. However, the CD was worth it if only for
the section on the Death of Minnehaha. You really need a box of tissues handy.
Back in the 60's. like rhapsody in blue, you didn't allow us to like such
music!! Those were the days before I had my own opinions.
Happy New Year!!
Gervais (Sawyer) (59-64)
I am mortified that my 'tastes' were so forceful and I am glad you
developed your own views - that's, after all, what education is all about! Did I
really discourage you from enjoying Rhapsody in Blue? Oddly enough I now think
it is one of the few pieces worth listening to, produced by any American! And I
did often play it to later generations of poor fourth formers in their musical
appreciation classes, sprawled out on the floor of the drawing room!
I agree with you about the cost of the Dinner but believe it or not, we have not
found a single restaurant in London that would do it for less.
Nick
