David Wakely wins again at the OC Golf Day in June.
David Wakely could not attend the Golf Day last year as he was fulfilling his
many duties as Captain of his home club but was back with a vengeance at the O.C.
golf day on June 15th at Temple Golf Club. David won the Iwerne Cup a couple of
years ago and stormed to victory again in 2005 with 36 Stableford points.
Runners up were Barry Stevenson, who comes to Temple from Bath and Colin Bothway
who travels from Norfolk. It was also good to see John Garnett, who makes the
trip from Crickhowell in South Wales. It is great to see these redoubtable Old
Clayesmorians take time out to support this annual golf event and to see them
all play some good golf.
There was also a morning singles competition this year and Piers Sabine produced
one of finest performances at Temple to score 38 points and just squeeze by
(difficult for Piers!!) the in-form Mr Wakely. David Caddy, making a welcome
return was third. We are always pleased to have guests join us for the day, and
the Guest Prizes were won by Nick Mason and David Crawford.
The afternoon fourball competition was won by Steve Hyde and Julian Bailey with
Colin Scragg and Piers Sabine in second place.
At around 9pm following dinner and a couple of glasses of red wine, our oldest,
but always tireless member Mr George Hodgson rose from his seat and called for
silence. This was a break with tradition, and something not in the script at
all. George had been canvassing the OCGS members and on their behalf presented
me with a beautiful Villeroy and Boch glass bowl for organising these O.C. Golf
Days for the last 14 or so years. It was a huge surprise and I would like to
express my thanks, in this report, to the OCGS for a wonderful gesture and for
theirs and the O.C. Society’s continuing support for an event which, I hope has
a lasting place in the O.C. calendar.
The date of next year’s event at Temple is 16th June 2006.
