Elisha Chng OC (1997 -

I am sure that many friends will be shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Elisha Chng who died tragically at the end of May.
Elisha was a fine Clayesmorian, as were his sisters, Eunice and Esther, and he entered very fully into the life of the school through his music and sport. He was a very loyal member of Devine and is fondly remembered by the staff here who knew him.
Everyone at Clayesmore extends their heartfelt sympathy to Elisha’s parents and family in their loss.
A Memorial Service was held in the School Chapel on Saturday 13th June, conducted by the Reverend Joe Edwards and the Headmaster. The tribute was by Daniel Rimmer, Housemaster of Devine.

It was with greatest sadness
that we announced the passing of Mélaine
Innocent on
Monday 11th
August 2008, after a most
courageous six month battle against cancer.
The Memorial Service was held on Friday 29th August 2008 at St. Paul’s Church, Ridley Avenue, Ealing London .
There was a wonderful Clayesmore turnout with fellow pupils, and Prep and Senior school staff joining family and other friends to remember a very special person.
The Order of Service may be viewed here, and her husband Keith has kindly allowed me to publish his most beautiful and moving address.
Mélaine's wish was that her ashes be spread at Clayesmore, and this has now been met. There will also be the planting of a tree to the north west of the main house front steps. I'm sure Melaine would love this most appropriate site between the Prep and Senior schools, where she spent so many of her formative years.
At the families request there were no flowers or wreaths at the memorial, however if you should wish to make a donation to the Hospice which cared for Mélaine, please follow this link. Select “Gift Type” Memorial, to donate in Melanie's name.

John Burnie (1966 -71) meets up with Shannon Falcone (1994 - 99) -
John's email reads - "I write with news of recently meeting an OC in Guadeloupe
in the French West Indies. I first met Shannon Falcone when he was representing
the School as Head Boy during a Simpson’s Dinner, one of the very few I have
been able to attend in recent years.
Shannon has always been a keen sailor as he lived on the island of Antigua
throughout most of his early life. His sailing skills are such that he is now a
full time member of the Prada America’s Cup Sailing Team which is a serious
Italian contender in the next America’s Cup series, soon to be contested in
Valencia. You have to be really good to get on to one of these teams today, and
it’s great we have an OC represented. Shannon is now absolutely huge and it was
rather amusing to all the crews present, seeing me (5ft 7ins) standing next to
him (gigantic) at the Zoo Rock pro am Sailing Regatta in Guadeloupe recently.
Meeting Shannon again, and seeing Peter Fox’s recent letter as the Ancient Mariner in the newsletter, (Pete Upton is doing the same in Australia apparently), reminded me that Clayesmore has always had a strong tradition of producing fine sailors - I thought that the OC Society should know that the fine tradition continues apace!"

News from Robert Soper (1990 - 94)
"I was at Clayesmore between 1990 and 1994, and thought I would send in an “update” on what has been happening with me up to this point from leaving school (I will try to ensure it is the shortened version!) I “bumped” into the OC’s website on the internet today, and was fascinated to see some faces that I have not seen for around ten years now, and to read their news.
As for me I went to New Zealand for a year, after finishing school, to be a “Gappy,” which was great fun. I then returned to the UK and had the misfortune to have to live in Salford (murder capital of the world for those of you who have never been there!) Where I went to university for two years, for some bizarre reason studying catering. After university I moved up to Edinburgh where I served in Lothian & Borders Police for five years. Whilst in Edinburgh I bumped into Phillip Scott, who is still in the Engineers, Catrin Abrahams, who last time I saw her was happily with child, and Melissa Hall, who last time I saw her was working in human resources (I think.) I have subsequently taken a “secondment” of sorts, serving in the Royal Cayman Islands Police, in Grand Cayman in the Caribbean. We managed to survive Hurricane Ivan in September of 2004, when the island was hit with 200mph winds and six foot storm surge, and soon afterwards made contact with Susie Sedgewick, who’s parents live “on island,” and we have been in touch with ever since. My fiancée Jenny and me are getting married in Nairn in Scotland next year, and there will be a few OC’s present. We have an application in to migrate to Australia, and in the “long term” plan to move to Queensland, where I hope to join the Queensland Police, and Jenny wants to go back to university to study marine biology.
I would love to hear from any other OC’s out there, you can email me by logging on. It would be great to hear everyone’s news and what they are up to, and maybe we can even organize a long overdue OC’s reunion – as long as it is somewhere in the Caribbean!
Many Thanks – Robert Soper (AKA – Soaps.)

We have received the sad news of the passing of Andrei Luboff (1940-1945). Andrei died on the 14th April 2005 after major heart surgery. His son Mark has contacted Headmaster Martin Cooke. Writing of his father’s enjoyment of his school days at Clayesmore and gained a great love of drama and the theatre during his time here. Andrei Luboff was a Cambridge man and there and at the Inter-Varsity Club in London, at the Dramatists Group in Kensington and in local amateur dramatic circles, he spent much of his time acting, directing and producing plays and revues of all types. Though a very successful city businessman working in banking and insurance, Andrei was never happier than when going to the theatre and even in his last year he had been a very active member of the Bromley Theatre Group. Mark has very generously suggested that his father’s love of the theatre, the roots of which lie firmly in Clayesmore soil, be commemorated in an annual award in his father’s name to be present annually to the most promising actor at Clayesmore.

Lil Goodman (nee Gordon Douglas). The
following has just been received from Mark Ward-Jackson
I regret to announce (belatedly) the death of my grandmother, Lil Goodman
(nee Gordon Douglas). Lil passed away peacefully on 6th September 2004 aged 91,
in Adelaide, Australia.
The name will not mean much to a great many of the OCs, but some may still
remember. She was a matron at Clayesmore in the mid 1930s, joining at the same
time with such giants as Appleby, Spinney and Verrinder. I believe she was known
as Matron Mi(nor) to contrast with her aunt, Miss Carvers Matron Ma(jor).
Although she was at the school for no more than a couple of years, it must
have made an impression on her as she made it the school of choice for my uncle,
Andrew Douglas Stewart (1955-58). Later, in the seventies, the family revisited
it by sending me and my brother Neil both to the prep school and the main
school.
To the future, I look forward as ever, to seeing you at various OC events!
Yours sincerely Mark
Ward-Jackson (prep 72-75, main 75-80)

Gorillas in the City - This email has just been received from Abi Salmon (1990 -92) -
Hello OC People,
I thought I would let you know that a few weeks back, I took part in The Great Gorilla Run for The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. I was dressed from furry head to fluffy toe in full gorilla suit and ran 7km to raise funds. I was one of about 600 gorillas who invaded the streets of the City of London (they don't know what hit them). If there were any other OC gorillas who took part, I would love to hear from them.
Other news from me, is that I am doing an Open University course in the Study of Mammals February 2004, then going on to do an Environmental Ranger Course in Kruger National Park (South Africa) in 2005.
Thanks,
Abi
