Nicholas Zelle (1955-1961)

Published on December 23rd, 2013 20:06

The Society is sad to announce the passing of Nick Zelle (1955-1961) in Malta on 25 November 2013. A former pupil, member of staff and long-standing member of the Society Committee.

We have received the following information from Nick's sister:

For personal family reasons I have decided to have a "family only" funeral and to arrange memorial services next spring both in North Curry and also in Malta, where we will all be able to sing his praises in words and wonderful music.

I have been made aware that some of you will be very disappointed not to be able to attend the funeral but hope that you can understand and respect my wishes. In order to give you an opportunity to share your sadness as well as to remember all the remarkable things he did and achieved I would like to arrange a lunch early in the new year - an informal celebration of his life as well as an opportunity for plans to be put forward for his memorial service. This will be held here from midday onwards on Sunday, 19th January. To help me with numbers and also to manage my emails, please could you ensure the subject line is "Lunch for Nick"

Nick left a large quantity of wine in the larder and I really hope that as many of you as possible will be able to come along and enjoy it whilst plans are discussed. With season's greetings -

If you plan to attend the lunch please email society@clayesmore.com and we will forward this on.

50 years ago on 11 February ........

Published on December 23rd, 2013 18:21

vPeter Drapkin writes -

50 years ago today the Beatles cut their first LP. Of course they made an impact on Clayesmorians. I was about 15 years old at the time. One fellow pupil gained our admiration by breaking all the rules and hitched to Liverpool to see them at The Cavern. He brought back some memorabilia as proof of his journey.

There was no mention of Beatles manager Brian Epstein by any officials of the school, while I was there. However a few of us at that time heard a rumour that he may have been at Iwerne. We delved into the files in the Burney Library where old issues of Punch and also The Clayesmorian were kept and indeed found mentions of his being a pupil at one time. It appeared to us, that his stay at the school was relatively short, less than two years. (Contemporaries of his might well have a more thorough picture they may care to share).

The full article will be published in the 2013 Old Clayesmorian Magazine.
