Lt Cdr Geoffrey Heneage Drummond, VC, RNVR

A service of commemoration and thanksgiving for the life of Old Clayesmorian Lt. Cdr. Geoffrey Heneage Drummond VC, RNVR was held in the school chapel at Clayesmore on Friday 7 May 2010. During the service a plaque donated by the OC Society was dedicated to his memory.
The service was attended by Commander Mortimer Drummond, Geoffrey’s son, and also his grandson, Commander John Drummond. Also present were Lady Colfox, direct descendant of Admiral Sir Victor Alexander Charles Crutchley, DSC, RN who recieved his VC in the same raid.
During the service citations were read by Commander John Drummond and two Cadet Corporals, Hannah Layer and Sam Maese. Commander Mortimer Drummond read from Laurence Binyon's poem "For the Fallen". Chairman of the OC Society, Andrew Beaton read the lesson and prayers were said by the Reverend Simon Beveridge, Chaplain of the Royal Marines in Poole.
The last post was played by two buglers from HMNB Portsmouth and the address was given by Rear Admiral Neil Morrisetti, CB, who spoke on the values of courage, duty, integrity and humility.
Lord Ashcroft kindly leant the school Drummond's VC group and also that of Brigadier Genral Francis Aylmer F A Maxwell VC, CSI, DSO & Bar - 18th Bengal Lancers, direct ancestor of three current Clayesmore pupils; Tom, Lucy and Archie Merriman who attended the service with their parents and grandparents.
The medals were borne to the Altar for the service by Cadet Staff Sergeant Archie Parks and had earlier been the topic of a lecture given to members of the school by Lord Ashcroft's curator, Michael Naxton.
